What we do

Over 95% of the UK’s international development sector is made up of small organisations; yet, appropriate and affordable support for charities of this size is limited. Fair Development Consulting was founded to support these organisations to survive, thrive and secure future sustainability.

‘Having worked directly with Victoria and Fair Development Consulting over the past 3-4 months, we have really felt the benefit. Our engagement has been very positive and extremely good value for money. Vic’s understanding of the small charity sector is quite unique in my experience and very valuable! I would highly recommend Fair Development Consulting to others in the sector!’ – Deborah Kimathi, Director of Vision Africa

Hywel’s attention to detail and focus on getting to the crux of the issue stand out to me. He is professional, writes well, is very thorough and well organised. We are a very small, young charity and we needed to know that every penny we were spending would count. He quickly understood our organisation and its aims so was able to spend the vast majority of his time researching relevant funding opportunities. Thus, he provided great value for money. I would highly recommend using his services through Fair Development Consulting. ” Helen Leale-Green, CEO, Our Moon

Organisational development

Including support with transition and change management, organisational health-checks, trouble-shooting for specific tricky issues, policy, procedures and systems design, implementation and management.

Strategy

With so many day-to-day responsibilities, strategic review, planning and future- proofing can be a challenge. We can support high-level strategic reviews, strategy development and succession planning to ensure the sustainability of your organisation.

Fundraising & marketing

From high-level strategy development to day-to-day implementation, including grants, major donors, community fundraising, individual giving, digital marketing and fundraising, social media, video production, communications, branding, web design and development.

Monitoring, evaluation & learning

We know you do amazing work, but how can you prove it to donors? More importantly, how can you be sure what you are doing is achieving real impact in the lives of your beneficiaries? We support the creation of robust monitoring, evaluation and learning frameworks, impact data collection tools, analysis and reporting.

Capacity building & partnership work

As a global development charity, the people you work with in the countries you support are vital to your work. We can support capacity building work in-country, partnership acquisition and development.

Gender Based Violence research project in western Kenya

In 2015, we supported Team Kenya in securing funding from Comic Relief and DfID’s Common Ground Initiative to conduct a piece of research into the root causes of School Related Gender Based Violence (SRGBV) in Ndhiwa, rural western Kenya. SRGBV is very prevalent in the area and many interventions have been trailed. Team Kenya wanted to identify the root causes of the problem so they could create interventions that would prevent the problem, not treat the outcomes.

We managed this research project from securing funding, to planning data collection (including a data collection and staff training visit to Kenya) and finally to analysing data collected, producing the final report and disseminating results.

    Strategy review and planning

In September 2016 our Founder and Director Vic worked with Tanzanian youth movement MOYODEI to conduct a strategic review and develop a new 3-5 year strategy for the organisation. Having founded, volunteered and worked in a small NGO herself, Vic is able to relate to the needs of smaller NGOs like MOYODEI and provide appropriate guidance and advice.

MOYODEI was founded in September 2013 by a group of passionate volunteers and local youth who had witnessed  the daily challenges in the lives of young people living the Morogoro region of Tanzania, among them: lack of access to education and employment opportunities, early teenage pregnancy, gender discrimination, and alcohol and drug abuse.

The leaders of MOYODEI wanted to work more strategically, improve their effectiveness and efficiency and create a clear strategy for where the organisation would go in the coming years.

We spent 2-3 days together creating a Theory of Change and developing a comprehensive strategic plan for the organisation for the next 3-5.

Lonny Chen, Founder and CEO of MOYODEI:

‘Just to know that others have gone through this, had both successes and non-successes, adjusted programs, and diversely funded themselves, and can relate to some of our frustrations and challenges was refreshing. It was Small NGO Therapy 101!! The discussions were all so relevant and interesting, with our projects having many similarities being in one community, looking at all angles of development, and having multiple projects to support that.’

Video production for small Kenyan NGO

In 2016, UK charity Team Kenya and their partner organisaion, Kenyan NGO, Ndhiwa Community Empowerment and Development Project (NCEDP) asked us to support them in producing a suite of videos to showcase the amazing work they are doing in Ndhiwa, rural Western Kenya.

    The work included:

    • Sourcing a first-class pro-bono videographer, director and producer, each with over 10 years experience of producing high quality work
    • Working with the videographer and producer on pre-production of the videos, including devising concept, storyboarding, liaising with key participants in the UK in Kenya including booking flights and accommodation, organising insurance and devising itinerary
    • Facilitating the filming itself in Ndhiwa, rural western Kenya, interviewing participants and working with the videographer and director to ensure we captured all the footage we needed
    • Post-production including providing feedback to videographer on cultural sensitivities, arranging translation of interviews, feeding back on cuts.

    Fundraising and marketing support

In May 2016, we began work with Kent based charity, Starfish Malawi, to support the marketing, fundraising and communications functions of the organisation.

    Specific work includes:

    • Development and implementation of a fundraising strategy, including supporting with trusts and foundation fundraising, individual giving, community fundraising, major donors, corporate, events fundraising and digital marketing and communications support including website review and development, social media management, communications and PR.

During our time working together, we also began to look at other functions of the organisation that would contribute to fundraising and marketing, for example collection of impact data and the use of a finance system to support fundraising.

Chris Knott, Founder and CEO, Starfish Malawi:

‘I have worked with Victoria for the best part of the year. What I recognised straight from the very beginning was that she was professional, consistent and reliable in all aspects of her work. If Victoria did not have enough work to do for any month, she would immediately flag this up and want to deduct money from her fee.

As regards the work itself she is always thorough and Starfish Malawi have benefited greatly from all her knowledge in respect to marketing and fundraising strategy and long-term planning for small charities. I have found Victoria to be multi-functional, which is a great asset to a small charity, and means that she is familiar with many disciplines, which enables her to have a very broad based approach to our work.

In terms of her understanding of overseas charities with their different aims and objectives, she has assisted us greatly to be able to understand our own “calling”‘

    Board and volunteer development

Vision Africa is a Christian charity with branches in UK, USA and Kenya which has supported vulnerable and disadvantaged children throughout Kenya since 2001.  Working in partnership with local community organisations Vision Africa currently support over 1800 children to build a brighter future.

Vision Africa wanted to develop their Board of Trustees and recruit new volunteers to help support their work in the UK. All of Vision Africa’s staff members are based in Nairobi, Kenya, so they needed to develop their UK presence.

We supported them to recruit new Board members and an Executive Development Board of volunteer fundraisers who now contribute to developing and implementing a fundraising strategy for the charity in the UK.
